Synchrotech now offering PCIe based ExpressCard to IEEE-1284 EPP Parallel

Synchrotech is now offering Quatech's PCIe based ExpressCard to IEEE-1284 EPP Parallel host adapter. Advantages of a PCIe-based ExpressCard design are in the interface to the laptop's motherboard. The PCIe bus interface is the successor to the PCI bus, which in turn was the successor to the ISA bus to which built-in parallel ports were originally attached. As such, the ExpressCard adapter design utilizes a PCIe-based design and can still directly use I/O space addresses and interrupts, thus more closely emulating built-in parallel ports than can be done via USB-based design. Moreover, because there's no USB stack for the drivers to contend with, throughput can be higher and latency will be lower (considerably so in many cases). Due to improved data transfer rate, the ExpressCard is considerably more efficient for multi-tasking operations.

Modern UDMA CompactFlash Reader Benchmarks FireWire vs. USB 2.0

Benchmarks demonstrating the wide gulf in speeds between high performance buses and lower performing buses when accessing data on UDMA enabled CompactFlash Cards. As with benchmarks comparing hard disk drives, FireWire consistently beats out USB 2.0 by significant margins for read and write speeds to mass storage devices. With recent UDMA CompactFlash reaching throughputs of Ultra ATA/133 (UDMA 6), choosing an appropriate CompactFlash reader to take advantage of such speeds is mission critical.

Bundle Deal on Dual CFFire800 Pro Photojournalist Setup

In 'Creating Fastest Portable RAW Photo Import for Pro-Photojournalists' Synchrotech describes an innovative two headed FireWire 800 to UDMA CompactFlash reader solution using a single FireWire 800 port and no external power supply. This setup allowed sports photographers in the field to simultaneously ingest two UDMA 6 CompactFlash cards into MacBook Pros while maintaining compatibility with photo management software. Synchrotech has taken this innovative solution for portable, super fast photograph transfers and created bundle packages for DSLR photographers requiring the fastest portable import method around. The first package is two Synchrotech CFFire800 Pro UDMA CompactFlash readers, a Unibrain FireRepeater 800, and a Unibrain 9pin to 9pin Cable 1M. The second package consists of two SanDisk Extreme FireWire CompactFlash readers, a Unibrain FireRepeater 800, and a Unibrain 9pin to 9pin Cable 1M. The bundle deals save $10 over purchasing the individual devices separately. Using FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 adapter plug allow this same setup off powered FireWire 400 ports as well.

Selecting USB 2.0 Hubs

USB Hubs allow multiplication of ports off a single USB port. Because of USB's tiered-star (hierarchical) topology, USB cannot be daisy chained. The only way to connect multiple USB devices either in succession or to a single USB port is to deploy a USB hub. The vast majority of today's USB hubs are USB 2.0 compliant, offering USB 2.0's high-speed (480Mbps) capability. When choosing a USB 2.0 hub, look for units that come with a power supply. While most USB 2.0 devices don't draw too much current, un-powered hubs with a typical 300mA per port are usually insufficient for most application. USB 2.0 hubs that can provide up to 500mA for most of its ports are much more useful for a wider range of devices.
